My paintings are very personal pieces that have been inspired by particular people and situations in my life. Certain subjects or objects attract me. They seem to resonate with my sensibility. It could be an attraction of a certain look, a form, or even the shadow the form creates. Text, language and the rhythm of pattern is also a very prominent feature. I find it adds a visual complexity and speaks of a subtext within. It hints at the layers of meaning and alludes to the personal stories the work represents. My family has a relatively short history in Australia. This means there is not the sense of generations connected to place – no family objects handed down from one generation to the next. My paintings evoke my delight in remembering. They are imbued with my own sense of family, personal history and an appreciation for the sacred within the everyday. The scale of the subjects or objects in my exhibition work is usually much larger than life. I find the larger scale gives the objects more presence. It lifts their status and raises their level of importance. It invites the viewer to notice the role everyday objects play in our lives, bringing us comfort and a sense of well being. In direct contrast, my small paintings tempt the observer to move in close for an intimate interaction making the experience more personal. Hopefully my work, whether large or small, instills a delight in remembering your stories too. |
